Even if your business is not technology related or perhaps you don’t use technology yourself, your potential customers are using technology to find you. You could be losing potential customers if you can’t be found on the web, you don’t have an internet presence, and you are not listed in industry specific web directories.

Like all business owners, your priority is focusing on how to build your business and increase sales. So, trying to decide what content you will put on your website and how to arrange it can be overwhelming. When you are ready to turn your vision into a reality, it is helpful to find the answers to these questions:
- Who is your target audience? Be as specific as possible. Who will you be selling to? To whom do you want to provide the information to?
- Why is your web site needed? Without a clear purpose on the front page, your customers will be confused and have no desire to stay at your site nor have the desire to read deeper and further. State your your purpose in one simple sentence near the top of the page.
- What content and/or graphics will you put on your site? Write down the specific pieces of information you want on your site based on your target audience’s needs.
- Where will you place your content on your site and how will it be arranged? Think about the structure, consistency and download time because people surfing the web want the information and want it quickly. Therefore, the navigation links on your site are extremely important and must be clear and should be easy to see and follow.
- Where will you place your graphics, pictures or photos? Graphics, pictures and photos related to your content are very important because they make your website more interesting and attractive. However, they should be used sparingly and in the right places so that it does not impede on download time. Remember that not everyone has broadband, DSL, or high-speed internet. There are many users who still have dial-up internet. You want to make your site quickly available to ALL users.
- Will you be selling your products and/or services online? If so, first, you will need to identify which products/services you will offer online. Secondly, You will need a merchant account for credit card processing or use a service like PayPal whi that offers many merchant tools. Thirdly, you will need a shopping cart service to help process your online orders.
- Look at your competition's
websites. This will give
you an idea of what you like and don't like and helps you determine
what you want to see on your own site.
